Compact speed monitors: Applications

Facilities exhaust fans

Almost all manufacturing facilities have fans to circulate air, evacuate areas, and remove heat, odors or chemicals from the production floor. Most of these fans are in remote or hard-to-reach areas, so they may not be inspected as routinely as necessary to ensure proper function.

ifm’s compact speed monitors the rotational speed of the fan for underspeed or standstill, which could indicate the need for maintenance. A simple warning alarm helps to minimize unplanned downtime. Minimize changeover time since the sensors are color and texture independent.

Conveyor speed monitoring

The challenge

Whether it is a conveyor belt, screw conveyor or bucket elevator, conveyors transport product or work in process from one area of the plant to another. To avoid unplanned downtime caused by considerable material build-up, it is important to maintain a smooth operating conveyor system. Efficient throughput requires all conveyors to function at the highest and safest speed and that requires speed monitors with fast detection speed.

The solution

Due to the inductive or magnetic sensing technology employed, ifm’s speed monitors detect targets on rotating conveyor shafts of up to 30,000 pulses per minute. This ensures optimal throughput in your process.

  • The decentralised sensor monitors whether a machine is still running
  • The sensor can output an alarm message as soon as the conveyor system stops
  • The controller does not have to evaluate complex pulses and frequencies itself and therefore has more capacity for the actual control functions.
