OID Laser distance sensors: Applications

Food and beverage

A yogurt manufacturer installed a bank of OID laser sensors above a transport conveyor to detect presence of cups in a tray. Because the color, surface texture and material of lid varies, traditional photoelectric sensors could cause false switching and thus cause unplanned downtime.

With the pmd time-of0flight technology, the OID sensors detect shiny, matte, dark or light surfaces of any color reliably. Using IO-Link, the actual distance information is available, making it useful for detecting missing lids.

  • Reduce downtime due to easy installation and setup.
  • Minimize changeover time since the sensors are color and texture independent.
  • Improve process transparency with actual distance measurement via IO-Link.

Warehouse automation

Efficient e-commerce operations require reliable warehouse automation. Numerous packages are sorted, transported and sent to customers worldwide. The packages come in different sizes and the process is very fast. False switching causes unplanned downtime, so reliable detection of all different kind of boxes with different colors and surface texture is a must.

The OID sensors are reliable and robust in these applications. The reliable detection of different types of packages increases productivity and uptime of the process.

Packaging

To provide a continuous amount of film for automated packaging equipment, the roll of film is changed on the fly. To minimize downtime and waste of film, an accurate measurement of the film roll diameter is critical.

The OID laser distance sensors provide the distance value reliably and accurately to keep the machine running continuously.
