SMF sanitary magmeter: Installation guidelines

Thank you for your purchase of an SMF sanitary magmeter. On the following pages, you will find information to help you install and program the sensor as well as answers to frequently asked questions.

Should you need additional support, feel free to contact our service center at 800-441-8246 and speak to one of our application engineers.

Best practices for installing SM magmeters

For the best performance of the SMF family of sensors, please adhere to the guidelines on this page. For more details, please refer to the operating instructions with the product datasheet.

Direction of flow

The arrow etched on the sensor housing indicates flow direction.

  • The display indicates flow in the opposite direction of the arrow with a minus sign.
  • Analog and switching signals are based on flow only in the direction of flow.  The analog signal can be scaled from -100% to 100% of the final measuring range.
  • When using IO-Link, the process value includes the direction of flow, meaning negative flow can be measured and transmitted.
  • The direction of flow can be changed in the parameter setting of the sensor.

Device dimensions and straight pipe run

The SMF sensor has a “full-bore” measurement channel in order to achieve its large measurement ranges.  Pipes, bends, valves and reducers can affect the function of the sensor, causing measurement inaccuracies.  To return the flow back to a laminar state, distances of straight pipe run should be used.  Use the chart below calculate the required straight pipe run upstream and downstream of the flowmeter.

This chart is only to determine straight pipe run distance.  If the total installation length of the SMF with adapters is needed, refer to the operating instructions.

Mounting locations

Air bubbles and partially filled pipes can affect the measured values. As long as the meter is installed in a closed loop system where the pipe is always filled and no air bubbles can form, the orientation of of the sensor is not critical.

For open piping systems, refer to the recommended and not recommended orientations below.

5 flow sensors in a pipe system. 3 with 'check' marks above it, 2 with 'x' above it. One of the 'x' units is mounted at the highest point of the pipe system and the other in a downpipe.

Recommended and non-recommended installation positions

Mounting near control valves

When installing the SMF near valves, be sure to place the SMF upstream of a control valve in the direction of flow.

One flow meter installed before a valve with an 'check' above it. One installed after a valve with a 'x' above it.

Mounting near a pump

When installing the SMF magmeter near pumps, be sure to place the SMF downstream of a pump in the direction of flow.

  • If the SMF is installed upstream of a pump, cavitation can occur damaging the sensor.
  • If a piston, piston diaphragm or peristaltic pump is used, install a dampener to reduce the intensity of pulsed flow at the sensor.

Mounting in a pipe section with high vibration

When installing the SMF in an area with high vibration, be sure to add support either at or near the process connections.  Distance between support structures should not be greater than 10m.

Three SMF flow meters with support structures for vibration and one with the supports more than 10 mm apart and the pipe is caving in towards the flow meter.

Mounting according to 3A applications

When installing the SMF in an area that requires 3-A approval, either orient the pipe section vertically or on a gradient.  This ensures that media can flow out of the process adapter.

Two flow meters: One oriented vertically and one oriented on an angle with flow going up.

1: Minimum gradient
