SMF sanitary magmeter: Technology

Magnetic flow meters, commonly known as magmeters, utilize the principles outlined in Faraday's law of induction to accurately measure the flow of conductive liquids in various application settings

Magnetic-inductive principle of operation

The magnetic-inductive, or magmeter, measuring principle operates according to Faraday's law of induction. Faraday's principle predicts how a magnetic field will react when a voltage is induced in the field.

When a conductive medium flows through a pipe in a magnetic field, the charged particles from the conductive media are directed to an electrode on one side based on the flow direction. Depending on the flow velocity, more or fewer charge carriers are led past the electrode, generating a voltage proportional to the flow velocity or volumetric flow quantity. The voltage is tapped via the measuring electrodes and converted in the evaluation electronics to a usable control signal. As the pipe cross-section is defined, the volumetric flow quantity can be determined exactly.

Universal electrode design

The SM Foodmag incorporates a spiked electrode, designed to enhance its versatility and efficacy in handling a wide array of media types. This electrode allows the device to efficiently measure media, including those that leave challenging residues such as fat and protein. The spiked electrode provides a broad contact surface, ensuring consistent performance across different substances, while also penetrating residues that might otherwise hinder the device's operation. Additionally, the spiked design is more easily cleaned during the CIP process. This electrode design ensures that the SM Foodmag can maintain optimal functionality and accuracy, even in demanding environments where residue buildup is common.

Integrated conductivity measurement

The SM Foodmag enhances its functionality by incorporating a conductivity measurement in addition to monitoring flow, totalizer, and temperature. All four measurements can be monitored simultaneously via a single IO-Link connection. This added conductivity measurement provides critical insights into the type of media flowing through the pipe, being precise enough to detect phase changes and distinguish between product flow, chemical wash, and rinse water. By identifying these different phases, the SM Foodmag ensures optimal process control and efficiency, preventing the risk of cross-contamination to ensure product quality and safety.
