Accuracy and reliability calculation examples

Most of ifm’s flow meters use a two-part accuracy calculation, based on the measured flow rate (MW) and full range of the meter (MEW). However, the SMFxxx series uses a velocity offset instead of the full range. For example, accuracy of the SMF421 is specified as:

± (0.5 % MW + 1.5 mm/s)
1.5 mm/s in a 47mm internal diameter = 2,602.4 mm³/s = 0.04 gpm
             For MW = 50 gpm, accuracy = ± (0.005*50 + 0.04) = +/- 0.29 gpm

The repeatability calculation is not consistent over the entire flow measuring range of the unit, but can be calculated at each measurement value. For example, repeatability of the SMF421 at 50 gpm (MW) is specified as:

± (0.1% MW)
repeatability = +/- (0.001*50) = +/- 0.05 gpm
