Intelligent valve positioner for quarter-turn valves

ifm's MVQ301 kit is a valve positioner that also functions as a valve sensor. A valve sensor provides feedback on the valve position, while a valve positioner controls the opening and closing of the valve. The MVQ301 both provides feedback and positions the process valve to an exact degree by alternating the 3-way solenoid control valve.

Benefits of the MVQ valve positioner

Reduce total cost of the system   Improve product quality and process visibility   Save on energy and compressed air   Maximum safety
  • The MVQ valve positioner offers the best price-to-performance ratio on the market.
  • Simplify complexity with all M12 connections and 5-pin cable for both feedback and control.
  • Modular system design allows users to replace only faulty parts.
  • Reduce installation and integration time.
  • Does not require highly skilled electrician for wiring and commissioning.
  • IO-Link adaptation is easy. We provide IO-Link device descriptions and AOIs (add-on instructions)  free of charge.
  • Teaching the sensor is as simple as clicking a button.

  • The new positioner offers high positioning accuracy, +/-2% and excellent repeatability.
  • Performance is continuously improved over time with the positioner’s control algorithms that learn from each valve movement.
  • Total visibility and transparency of the processes. Clear indication and warning when valve is not in position.
  • Minimize unplanned downtime with easy troubleshooting thanks to LEDs on the Y-splitter cable to the solenoids indicating the status of the operation.

  • The solenoids provided by ifm have very low power consumption, only 1 W.
  • Compressed air is not needed when the valve is in position, therefore, there is no leakage and no consumption of compressed air.

  • In case of a fault, the valve can be programmed to move to a certain position in order to avoid disruptions in the process or hazards. This integrated safe-state function is configurable by the user via the free programming software, moneo configure.
  • The B-port of the IO-Link master is supplied by 2 power sources, with pins 2 and 5 providing an additional isolated supply voltage to connect output devices that require increased power. This allows the user to shut off cut power to the solenoids, while still getting position feedback from the sensor.

Enhance valve control with ifm's smart MVQ positioner

Positioners are used to control the pneumatic actuator and position the process valve as desired. In industries where precise fluid flow control is essential—such as oil and gas, chemical processing, food and beverage, and water treatment—valve positioners ensure that valves operate accurately and reliably, contributing to process efficiency, safety, and product quality control. The high-precision valve positioner from ifm for quarter-turn valves is designed based on the proven MVQ platform.

Key features:

  • Smart algorithm: The MVQ positioner incorporates a self-learning smart algorithm within its sensor. When the sensor receives a command from the PLC or another control system, it intelligently recognizes the current valve position and compares it with the input. This dynamic algorithm ensures precise valve positioning.
  • Dual-coil solenoid valve: The positioner includes a dual-coil (bi-stable) 5/3-way solenoid valve. By energizing both solenoids alternately, it controls the flow of compressed air to move in or out in order to move the valve to the correct position.
  • Continuous learning: The smart MVQ positioner learns the valve it controls and improves its control performance each time the valve moves. The device continuously compares the actual value with the target value to compensate for interference affecting the control performance, such as temperature fluctuations or component wear.
  • Modular design: The MVQ valve positioner kit consists of several separate parts, making it easy to replace individual components when damaged:
    • a sensor/control unit MVQ301
    • a dual-coil (bi-stable) 5/3-way solenoid valve
    • a throttle plate for compressed air control
    • all necessary pneumatic components and cables
