O6D laser distance sensor
The O6D laser distance sensor from ifm detects any target within three meters, regardless of color, shape, material, finish, or reflectivity. It keeps pace with today’s distribution line speeds and supply chain variability by automatically switching between object characteristics within milliseconds, without adjustment.
The O6D detects any color, from black to white at a price point well below similiar sensors. With Ultimate Black Mode, it detects extremely low-reflectivity targets (dense black rubber, matte plastics, foam, etc.) that return minimal light. The sensor also works when mounted at any angle, no matter how steep.
Optical sensing systems are a common industrial automation application. But, finding the right solution for parts that can vary and an environment that can change is challenging.
Detection challenges:
- Black targets greatly reduce sensing range
- Shiny metals saturate sensors with excessive light return
- Oil-covered surfaces create irregular reflectivity
Operational constraints:
- Space limitations force steep mounting angles
- Sensor must be mounted too far or too close to the target
Business impact:
- "My sensor works for the original product but fails when we introduce new SKUs."
- "Our targets vary from black to white, and our sensors miss products."
- "Sensor recalibration during product changeovers causes downtime."
- "We can't get close enough to the target for optimal detection."
- "Sensors installed on steep mounting angles don’t reliably detect objects.”
Missing detections and false triggers cause downtime and supply chain issues at a time when facilities handle more inventory than ever before. ifm designed the O6D series laser distance sensor to address these specific concerns. It was validated in more than 30 diverse, real-world facilities. With PLC integration, compact rectangular housing, and easy setup, the O6D perfectly fits retrofit applications and new installations.
A Smarter Approach to Optical Sensing
One sensor for multiple product types
Production lines run multiple SKUs with objects of different colors, sizes, materials, and textures. Sensors calibrated to a specific color saturation, light levels, and reflectivity will detect one object but miss another. The O6D switches parameters automatically in five milliseconds to be ready for any product. That's faster than objects moving through its detection zone, ensuring it catches everything. The "set-it-and-forget-it" sensor doesn't require technician labor time for adjustments or recalibration.
Detecting difficult characteristics
Some objects are hard for sensors to detect. Shrink wrap or waxy surfaces create irregular reflectivity, black targets absorb more light, requiring more energy from the sensor, and rough materials scatter light. The O6D sensor process bypasses the limitations of a single set of parameters to ensure nothing is missed. It takes multiple readings at different exposures in less than a second, and blends them to capture the full range of variables.
Reliable performance at any angle or proximity
Safety requirements, space constraints, and existing equipment can force sensors into steep angles or awkward distances. Objects end up outside of a sensor's acceptance angle, or unpredictable light scatters create noise. Objects too close to a sensor can appear blurry, create oversaturation, or bounce light away from the sensor. The O6D's three-meter detection range and time-of-flight technology deliver reliable detection regardless of proximity or mounting angle.
Streamline hardware costs
Production environments often require multiple sensor types at multiple points on a distribution line. The cost of detecting different products from different angles adds up quickly. The O6D's universal detection capabilities enable facility-wide standardization. When a sensor performs reliably in worst-case scenarios, such as detecting black targets at steep angles, it handles standard applications easily. At a $260 per-unit price point, the O6D delivers this flexibility while staying under budget.
ifm’s pmd time-of-flight technology has gained a new feature.
This patent-protected feature allows the sensing engine to know if the receiver is being saturated (shiny objects at close range) or weak (black targets at long range).
Once it knows, then the sensor recalibrates itself to optimize the application.
