O6 small rectangular photoelectric sensor

The O6 small photoelectric sensor, housed in a durable rectangular metal casing, delivers best-in-class optical performance and is built to withstand harsh environments for various applications. For cost-sensitive applications, a plastic version is also available. Featuring a small light spot for detecting tiny targets, the O6 is part of a comprehensive product family that includes background suppression, retro-reflective, and through-beam models.

Precision sensing with advanced background suppression

This industry-leading sensor delivers reliable background suppression, resisting interference from highly reflective surfaces, even those parallel to the beam that typically cause false triggers. Detection remains consistent across target colors and surface finishes.

Built for harsh environments, the sensor self-compensates for water droplets and steam, ensuring performance in washdown or steamy conditions. Its small, precise light spot minimizes crosstalk and enables accurate detection of even the smallest black or white targets.

This focused light spot (far right) drives the O6’s best-in-class optical performance, allowing reliable detection of small targets several meters away in retro-reflective models.

Extreme testing ensures top quality

No matter how harsh the environments, ifm’s commitment to quality is built into every sensor.

The mechanical design of the O6 WetLine series meets all the demanding requirements of the food and beverage industry:

  • High-grade stainless steel housing ensures exceptional durability and resistance to corrosion
  • Shatterproof plastic lens eliminates the risk of glass contamination in the process
  • IP69K rating withstands high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns
  • Robust sealing concept proven through extreme testing for long-term reliability

In hygienic and wet areas, O6 photoelectric sensors endure frequent cleaning cycles. Water spray and steam testing confirm reliable switching behavior, even under intense washdown conditions, while maintaing consitent detection distance.

Thermal shock testing

Thermal shock testing demonstrates suitability for environments with fluctuating temperatures ranging from -25 to 80 °C. Each sensor undergoes 40 cycles of rapid temperature change between 0 and 80 °C. Afterward, they pass rigorous visual inspections, high-voltage, and insulation resistance tests to ensure full functionality.

Steam testing

A specially developed steam boiler test validates the effectiveness of the dual-sealing design around the potentiometers and flush-front lens. Sensors are exposed to 95% humidity and rapid temperature shifts, proving their resilience in real-world CIP (clean-in-place) environments.
