Video report

The aim of the Fraunhofer FFB is to enable large-scale production with the technical infrastructure to produce battery cells at very high throughput. One approach to achieve higher efficiency is the use of sensors and measurement technology. In the joint project with ifm, object detection sensors from the O2D series are used. They inspect the surface of the wet film for various defects as well as the dimensions of the coating.

These defects can later be critical for both safety and performance in the battery cell and must therefore be identified as rejects. The object detection sensors from ifm are also used after the drying process because at this point it is necessary to check whether the web and coating edges as well as the coating are congruent with each other in order to realise the transport to the next process step. The data recorded along the entire process chain can be used to identify cause-and-effect relationships between product and process, and also to create a digital product twin.

About Fraunhofer FFB Münster

In 2021, Fraunhofer FFB put its first systems into operation in the "FFB Workspace" at the Alexianer Werkstätten in Münster. Fraunhofer FFB (Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB) carries out research in battery cell production and uses ifm sensors for object detection in the first process steps.
