Incremental encoders

Incremental encoders generate a precisely defined number of pulses (increments) per revolution. When referenced to a starting point or home position, conclusions regarding the current position of the connected shaft are possible based on the number of pulses generated.
If the power supply is interrupted, the encoder must first return to the starting point or home position after it is switched on again to accurately determine the shaft position again. This process is called homing run.
When operating incremental encoders, it is possible to choose between HTL mode (recommended for long cable lengths) and TTL mode for up to 12,000 rpm. To reduce variant complexity, users can flexibly program resolution anywhere between 1 and 10,000 increments.
Incremental encoders are suited for fast applications, detecting any position change of an angle.

Comparison of encoders with and without IO-Link

When used conventionally without IO-Link, the current position is not referenced, which means that relative values to the angular position, speed or direction of rotation can only be calculated via the PLC.

When used with IO-Link, more information can be retrieved. The encoder knows its current position without PLC involvement and maintains this position even in case of a voltage drop. This means that incremental encoders with IO-Link behave like absolute singleturn encoders. They output an absolute position value within one revolution.

PerformanceLine

Performance Line encoders have an integrated signal evaluation for speed monitoring, counter functions and detection of the direction of rotation. They provide easy setting and position value indication by means of display and operating keys with intuitive menu navigation. Diagnostic and parameter data are reliably transferred via IO-Link. Ready for Industry 4.0!

Encoder mode

  • Displaying the position based on the resolution set via IO-Link

Counter mode

  • The unit counts up to the maximum value set via IO-Link (e.g. 9999)

Speed monitor mode

  • Revolutions per minute [min-1]/ frequency [Hz]

BasicLine

Cost-effective version without display

  • Displaying the position based on the resolution set via IO-Link
  • Axial or radial cable entry
  • Programmable:
  • resolution (2 to 10,000 pulses)
  • TTL or HTL output
  • counting direction (clockwise/anticlockwise)

WetLine

ifm’s stainless steel incremental encoders, for applications such as conveyor belt synchronisation, ensure longer maintenance intervals in harsh environments. The increased protection rating IP 67 qualifies them for use in wet areas in the food industry.

  • Longevity thanks to resistant stainless steel and high ingress resistance at the shaft side
  • Clearly legible laser type label
  • Versions as solid shaft with clamp/synchro flange or as hollow shaft
  • Convenient communication via IO-Link
  • Rotatable M12 connector can be used radially or axially
