R1D radar sensor for distance and level detection in harsh environments

ifm R1D radar sensor sitting in a pile of snow with fog surrounding it

Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) technology enables precise distance measurement by emitting radio waves and analyzing their reflections. By measuring the time it takes for these waves to bounce off an object and return, radar systems can calculate the distance to that object.

ifm's R1D narrow beam radar distance sensor uses FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar to precisely detect objects, speed, and position. Since it does not depend on visually seeing an object, radar sensors are ideal for indoor / outdoor operation in conditions including rain, snow, fog, smoke and complete darkness.

Key features and benefits

Reduce total cost of the system   Simplify complexity   Increase system availability and reliability   Improve product quality and process control
  • ifm's radar sensor offers the best price-to-performance ratio on the market.
  • Radar technology is robust and durable, so maintenance costs are minimized.
  • Multiple process values with only one sensor for both object detection and level measurement.
  • Reduced installation and integration time.

  • Plug-and-work solution for common applications.
  • Easy configuration even for challenging applications through an intuitive GUI, eliminating the need for highly skilled personnel.
  • Compact and light form-factor allows easy installation and flush mounting when space is limited.
  • IO-Link adapation is easy with free and downloadable IODDs and PLC AOIs.

  • The sensor is immune to environmental factors like smoke, steam, dirt, and air disturbances, ensuring consistent detection.
  • Resistance to varying light conditions makes it ideal for outdoor use or in areas with fluctuating lighting.
  • Reduces unplanned downtime by avoiding false triggers and failures other technologies may experience.
  • Built-in inclination sensor ensures proper installation conditions and will alarm if unintentionally changed.
  • Internal diagnostic functions improve machine availability.

  • Unparalleled long range with excellent accuracy ensures precise process control.
  • Continuous non-contact measurement through plastic tank walls eliminates potential contamination of liquid media that may affect product quality.

The detection area of the radar sensor changes with distance.

  1. Move the slider bar to your desired range.
  2. Read the horizontal and vertical dimensions in the field of view image.
  3. Your target must fall within these dimensions to be detected.
