  1. Compact inductive sensors
  2. IO-Link benefits

Unlock sensor potential with IO-Link

ifm’s inductive sensors with IO-link incorporate several functions in one small housing. They can be used as a standard inductive proximity switch with adjustable switching point or a precise measuring system with measured process values transmitted via IO-Link. With the compact housing and the unbeatable precision, maximum OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) can be achieved.

ifm’s offering of IO-Link enabled inductive proximity sensors include M8 tubular sensors with up to 7.5 mm range and rectangular “flat pack” sensors with up to 8 mm range.

  • Precise distance measurement via IO-link
  • Diagnostic information ensures optimized machine availability

Accuracy and linearity

The process value provided over IO-Link is linear over the entire sensing range, making these sensors ideal for measurement and error-proofing applications

1 = Process value, 2 = Process value setting range, 3 = Sensor setting range, 4 = Distance to face

IO-Links adds value to prevent downtime and ensure quality

Unbalance

An unbalance in a flywheel or drive shaft can result in damage to the production line and the product itself. To prevent this, the sensor monitors an acceptable tolerance range of the unbalance.

Thickness of brake pads

Each braking process leads to abrasions of the brake pads. The sensors are used to measure the thickness and report to the control system when the thickness of the brake pads drops below a predefined threshold, so that the brake pads can be exchanged before any damage occurs.

Saw blade tension

The inductive sensor with IO-Link measures distance to the object reliably and precisely. It monitors the tension of a saw blade. Loosening, jamming and tearing of the saw blade are detected and so damage to the production line or the product can be prevented.

Stamping

Since a stamping die is a precision mechanical tool, sensors must do more than confirm a stripper plate is positioned correctly or a blank is properly placed for punching. Small guides such as bending points and short/long-feed feedback is essential to a high-quality stamp that is safe for the press to engage.

Flat pack sensors with IO-Link are able to measure small sub-millimeter changes that can happen over time. Using IO-Link helps minimize the risk of unexpected downtime.

With IO-Link, the flat pack sensors can provide:

  • Relative distance to target
  • Number of power cycles
  • Number of operating hours
  • Automatic device replacement
