Use cases vortex sensors

The vortex sensors reliably measure the flow rate in water and water-based media. Not only can the cooling capacity in cooling water applications be ensured, but the right amount of water for growing plants in indoor farming can also be precisely controlled. These use cases provide an insight into applications that have already been solved for our customers.

Flow monitoring - ensure cooling

With over 135 years of experience in the glass industry, HORN Glass Industries AG offers its customers worldwide customised solutions for all aspects of glass production, including furnaces in which the glass is heated using molybdenum electrons. One cooling circuit per electrode prevents the electrode holders from being damaged due to overheating. Among other things, this could lead to production downtime or a reduction in quality. At the flow control station, from which the individual cooling circuits go out, the SV vortex flow meter monitors the flow rate and the temperature of the cooling water. In combination with another thermocouple in the electrode holder, the cooling of the holder can be continuously monitored and recorded in this way.

Keeping an eye on cooling capacity and preventing damage

SCHOTT AG is an international technology group specialising in the manufacture of special glass and glass ceramics. Temperatures of up to 1700 °C are required for the melting process to produce special glass and glass ceramics. The required thermal energy is fed into the melting tank via water-cooled elements. Continuous cooling of those elements is extremely important, as a defect in the cooling water system can damage the installations severely.

A temperature sensor in the inlet of the cooling system and the SV vortex flow meter with integrated temperature measurement in the return line can be used to permanently monitor the cooling capacity via a power loss calculation and ensure the function of the installation. Thanks to the integrated temperature measurement, there is no need for an additional measuring point for temperature measurement. The SV is a reliable solution for cooling water applications, as it can be used both in new plants with demineralised water and in existing plants with black steel piping or in open cooling circuits. The measurement remains unaffected by the different cooling water qualities.

Checking temperature control channels in the mould and ensuring quality

E.Braun produces high-quality products for temperature control and refrigeration technology. Correct temperature control is crucial in the injection moulding process, among other things, in order to guarantee the required quality of the finished product in the long term. However, dirt and limescale can build up in the temperature control channels over time. In addition, the channels still contain residual moisture when the installation is at a standstill, which favours the formation of rust. Because of the resulting tapered cross-section in the channels, it may happen that the temperature control performance will not be achieved. This causes quality defects in the product to be processed.

The new testing device from E.Braun counteracts this problem. Firstly, the condition of the channels is checked before each use by measuring the flow and pressure in order to detect possible deposits and leaks. Secondly, the channels are blown dry after use to prevent formation of rust.

Optimum heat dissipation with minimum energy consumption

ALMiG is one of the leading system providers in compressed air technology and offers its customers high-quality, customised solutions and comprehensive services. In line with the principles of efficiency and sustainability, the compressors are subject to constant further development in order to reduce the energy consumption of the plants and achieve a higher level of efficiency. The SV vortex sensor is used on a test rig for water-injected screw compressors to determine the volumetric flow in the internal water circuit. Based on the flow rate and the temperature measuring points, an energy balance can be created to maximise the efficiency of the installation. In this specific case, maximum efficiency means that during the compression of the air, the compression heat is dissipated with the least possible energy input by means of a water circuit.

Making water treatment more efficient

For more than 30 years, EnviroFALK GmbH has been designing, manufacturing and selling pure and ultra-pure water systems for a wide range of industries worldwide. In the plants, the soft water supplied is treated in various steps to produce ultrapure water.
In addition to the partially demineralised water, i.e. the permeate, the filtration also produces concentrate. A defined proportion of this concentrate is fed back into the filtration process and to the filter membrane. This ensures minimum overflow while increasing the efficiency of the plant. The total amount of concentrate is detected and transmitted via the SV vortex flow meter, so that the inflow control can be precisely controlled at all times.
