AL40 and AL41 – 16 digital inputs
Linking digital input signals in the field
The Ethernet modules of the AL40 (StandardLine) and AL41 (PerformanceLine) series from ifm offer a powerful solution for acquiring digital input signals in industrial applications. With 16 digital inputs and an integrated counting function, they enable precise and reliable signal processing, even at high frequencies up to 4,500 Hz. Thanks to their compact design and robust construction, the modules are ideal for use in assembly and packaging technology as well as in conveyor systems. Easy integration into existing fieldbus systems such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus TCP offers maximum flexibility.

System overview Ethernet modules DI
16 digital Inputs
The StandardLine (AL40 series) and PerformanceLine (AL41 series) Ethernet modules each offer 16 digital inputs (2 per port) and are ideal for capturing and internally counting numerous digital signals directly in the field. They differ primarily in their power supply and cabling options.

Function and wiring of Ethernet Module DI
The modules with integrated counter function offer various counting modes that can be configured directly at the input. This allows pulses from sensors or switches to be recorded accurately, e.g. for piece counting, position detection or clock control. The maximum counting frequency is 4,500 Hz, so even high-frequency counting is no problem.
CTU (Up Counter)
Counts upwards with each pulse – ideal for counting workpieces or events.
CTD (Down Counter)
Counts down, e.g. from a defined number to 0 – useful for residual quantities or cycles.
CTUD (Up-Down Counter)
Counts up or down – depending on two different input signals.
CTDIR (Direction Counter)
Detects the counting direction (forward/backward), e.g. for conveyor belts or travel paths.
