They measure the distance between the sensor and the nearest surface point by point using the time-of-flight principle. The sensors illuminate the scene with an internal or external infrared light source and calculate the distance by means of the light reflected from the surface.
Photoelectric 3D sensors are suited for many different applications where:
Quad core iMx.6 processor calculates the full point cloud onboard the camera. There are 23,000 receiving elements arranged on the chip as a matrix. That means that not only one point but a complete scene is measured in only one capture. In addition to the distance image, the camera chip also provides a grey-scale image of the scene. The measured data can be evaluated with common image processing libraries. A software development kit with code samples is available in different programming languages. Custom algorithms may be deployed on the camera via OEM partition
