IO-Link Allen Bradley Integration

On this page, you will learn how to configure your IO-Link master with Allen Bradley using RSLogix5000. These three video tutorials include adding devices, changing data types, using add-on instructions, and adjusting port modes.

Fast facts

  • EDS Files Availability: EDS files for ifm's IO link masters are accessible on the ifm website's support download section.
  • Exclusive Owner Connection: By default, the connection to the IO link master is set as an exclusive owner, allowing only one PLC to read and write data.
  • Data Type Configuration: Changing the data type from SINT to INT displays the data as 16-bit values.
  • Changing Port Modes with RSLogix5000: Port modes of the EIP IO link master can be configured as either IO link ports or standard digital input/output, with specific settings to change the port mode.
  • LED Indicators for Port Modes: LED indicators show the status of each port mode; green for IO link connection, yellow for digital input/output, and off when deactivated.

Configuring the IO-Link Master configuration in RSlogix5000

Transcript:

This video will show you how to set up configuration of an ifm IO link master using the RSLogix5000 PLC software. If not already installed, please use the EDS installation tool found under the tools menu to add the required EDS file.

EDS files for ifm’s IO link masters can be found on the support download section of the ifm website.

To create a new device, right click on the Ethernet icon and select new module. To find the device, you can type ifm in the search area or enter the IO link master part number.

Highlight the device you want to create and click create. Provide a name and the IP address for the IO link master.

Go to module definition and click on the change button. By default, the connection is set as an exclusive owner, meaning that only this PLC can read and write data to this IO link master.

Change the data type from SINT to INT so that the data is displayed as 16 bit values. Then click okay. Click Yes to make the module definition changes.

Click okay to exit the new module menu. You can now see the new IO link master under the IO configuration tree.

Using the Add On Instructions for AL11-13 and 19 IO-Link Masters

Transcript:

This video will guide you through the process of how to use ifm’s add on instructions for the AL 11, 12, 13 and 19 series IO link masters. The add on instructions will allow access to the process, input and or output data and diagnostic flags for connected IO link devices.

First, you'll need to download the startup package for Ethernet IP IO link Masters.

This package contains detailed instructions on setting up the IO link masters with various PLC platforms. In this video we will concentrate on the Allen Bradley based platforms that use RSLogix 5000 software.

The instructions are located in the following folder. You will notice that ifm has written many add on instructions for IO link sensors in the RSLogix 5000 Environment.

Import the add on instructions into iris logic by right clicking on the add on instructions folder highlight and click on import add on instructions.

In our example, we will connect an O5 laser distance sensor to port one of our IO link master. Locate the add on instructions folder mentioned earlier. Select the 050 ID 8 port IOL add on and click on import.

Click okay to continue the 050 ID add on will now appear under the add on instruction folder and is ready to be used in the main PLC routine.

Simply drag and drop your new AOI into the ladder rung. Now assign a unique tag name to this Add on instruction. Point to the input data table of the IO link master with which you want to work the port process.

Data science value can remain at the default setting of four. This will set the size of each IO link port to be 32 bytes.

Enter the port number for the connected IO link device. In our example, we have connected the O5 laser distance sensor to port one. If the error flag goes away from the latter rung, you can now download the program into the PLC and put it into run mode.

In addition to the distance value, you will get diagnostic and sensor identity information with the AOI.

Changing port Modes of EIP IO-Link Master using RSLogix5000

This video will guide through the process of changing the port modes of EIP IO link master using the RSlogix5000 software. Each port of the island master is configurable either as an IO link port to communicate to IO link sensors and devices, or as a standard digital input or output.

The island configuration is the default setting for the IO link master.

The port mode can be found under controller tags name of the device see array. Each port of the IO link master is independently controlled with the variable port mode port number.

By default all ports are set to a value of three for IO link connectivity. To change the mode to digital input, set the value to one to set the port to a digital output.

Change the value to two. The setting of zero will completely deactivate the port. In the IO link mode, the led next to the port will blink green when an IO link connection has been established.

The green led will stop blinking and remain lit. For all other modes, a yellow led will turn on when a digital input or output signal exists.
