Is moneo On-Premises secure?

moneo offers functions for secure operation based on the different derivatives (Windows/Linux). As an appliance, moneo provides functions for secure access, use and securing of the solution. As an open system, moneo on Microsoft Windows is dependent on the functions provided by the operating system. Here, the responsibility for security lies with the customer.

The different derivatives offer the possibility to fulfill different security needs, from the appliance with all options to the integral solution based on Microsoft Windows.

Who is responsible for the security of moneo at my location?

As moneo can only provide functions, the use and the responsibility rests with the customer. When implementing the solution, it is recommended to check the options provided for operation and to configure them according to need. This specifically provides for the use of the user roles and the use of the backup and restore functionalities.

What are the differences between moneo on-premises (Windows or appliance) and the cloud offering?

moneo on-premises (Windows or appliance) and the cloud offering have many common features such as the standardized user interface and similar module functionalities. The main differences between the two deployment options are:

On premises (Windows or appliance):

Deployment location: With an on-premises installation, moneo will be used within the customer’s own IT infrastructure. It can be installed on a Windows server or on a dedicated appliance. The customer is responsible for the hardware and software infrastructure.
Self-maintenance: With an on-premises installation, the customer is responsible for the maintenance of the software, including updates. While ifm provides update packages, the customer is responsible for managing the installation.
Direct connection: Devices and IO-Link masters can be directly connected to the local moneo installation without having to use a moneo edge device.

Cloud (SaaS):

Infrastructure: The cloud-based moneo solution is offered as Software as a Service (SaaS) and hosted on the Microsoft Azure infrastructure. Customers do not have to worry about the underlying infrastructure; ifm is responsible for the operation, maintenance and updating of the software.
Data acquisition: The cloud version of moneo always requires a moneo edge device for data acquisition. The data from sensors and devices is transferred to the cloud via this edge device.

Is there a difference between the cloud and on-premises versions of moneo IIoT Core?

Both versions have the same basic functionality. The cloud version uses intelligent data pre-processing to enable efficient storage in the cloud, meaning that only the amount of data relevant to the user will be stored in the cloud. This offers greater flexibility and scalability compared to the on-premises use. The cloud application additionally offers remoteConnect.

Currently, moneo supports data collection from ifm devices such as the IO-Link master and the VSE vibration gateway. Future releases will include the abilty to read OPC UA and Modbus TCP data from various data sources.

Can I remotely access the data from the moneo software?

Accepted Answer

moneo, its settings and configuration are accessed through a web browser. The webservice is accessed on port 5000. When you have network connectivity with port 5000 open for traffic, you can get to your moneo instance remotely.

Can I import my own custom pictures to build dashboard displays?

Yes. Pictures and images can be added to customize your dashboard via the web browser. Click on the photo icon and choose the desired image. Once added, you can adjust the image size and positioning to fit your needs for the display.

Can the system send me a text message when an alarm occurs?

Accepted Answer

moneo can be configured with SMTP email channel settings (SSL and TLS are supported). Once the channel is set up, warnings and alarms are sent out via email to all users. To receive text messages, simply use your cellular provider's txt or mms extension with the 10-digit number. For example,

How do I activate my moneo license for the on-premises version?

Accepted Answer

There are two activation options for the on-premises version:

1. Online activation

Online activation is done by you in moneo. You need to download moneo and enter your LAC under “Online activation” after you have created your moneo account. For online activation, the device on which the moneo instance is running needs to be connected to the Internet.

2. Offline activation

Offline activation takes place via the “my ifm” account. If you do not have an account, you can create one for free.
To activate your license offline, go to “My Account” and select the option “My software” (Fig. 1).

Here you can enter your LAC (fig. 2).

To proceed, you need the digital fingerprint of the system on which you have installed moneo. For this, log in to your moneo instance.

If this is your first login, you will be asked for the type of activation (online vs. offline). Select offline activation.

If you have already activated moneo licenses, you can add further licenses via the license management in the system profile (via “+”).

If you have selected offline activation, the fingerprint will be displayed in the next step.

Copy and paste it into the pop-up window on the "”my ifm” page. Follow the steps.

You will receive a code that you can enter in the moneo software under “Offline activation”.

Is the license key recoverable if I lose it?

License keys are emailed to the user and are available on your "my ifm" e-shop profile. If, in any case, the license key is lost, please contact our Customer Service Center at 800-441-8246 and we will help you recover it.

Is there a limit to the number of devices (IPC, laptop, PC, etc.) that can use the same activation code?

No. Currently, the moneo IIoT Core can be expanded by the DataScience and Raw Data Recording functionalities for the on-premises environments (starter kit, appliance and vAppliance). We will gradually roll out these expansion options to the cloud version.

Currently, an instance can track up to 5000 infopoints, but our development team is increasing this limit rapidly. Be aware that sensors can have multiple infopoints available. Refer to the sensor datasheet for details.

Can cyclic and acyclic data be monitored in moneo as infopoints?

Accepted Answer

The moneo software cannot poll acyclic data from sensors, so infopoints are only cyclic data.

Question 22

If I am not using a particular process value from a sensor, does it still count against the total number of infopoints?

Accepted Answer

No. Only when the process value is pulled into the moneo software does it count as an infopoint.

What if I need more infopoints? How do I expand my system? Is there a discount for additional infopoints?

Accepted Answer

Simply purchase additional infopoint licenses with part number QMI001. They are priced per point. Currently, a single moneo instance can monitor up to 5000 points with that number expanding in the future.

Are there differences in the use of infopoints in the on-premises version and in the cloud?

In the on-premises version, a single infopoint is required to upload a specific measured value to the moneo system constantly once per second.

In contrast, in the cloud version, the number of infopoints required depends on the frequency with which a measured value is uploaded. For example, if a measured value is transmitted to the cloud once a minute, one infopoint will be required for this. If the measured value is transmitted to the cloud once per second, 60 infopoints will be required.

What is the moneo | appliance?

It is a Linux-based Industrial PC (IPC) specifically designed to run the moneo IIoT software platform. It comes preloaded with all moneo software modules (license purchase and activation required.)

No. Rather, the appliance provides a simple turnkey solution to provide proof-of-concept of the moneo platform to capture digital data from sensors at the plant floor and use it for maintenance and operating decisions.

Access the software simply through Google Chrome (V81 and higher) and Mozilla Firefox (V78 and higher) web browsers. These are the only browsers supported by moneo.

Is my IT department required to implement the appliance?

Not necessarily. The appliance operates independently from your plant network. The moneo software does not reside on your plant server, so IT assistance is not required. This allows you to evaluate the moeno software solution proof-of-concept easily with minimal integration required.

Because the appliance does not run on the plant wide server, you cannot take full advantage of all the benefits of the moneo IIoT software platform. This means, for example, that all kinds of maintenance tasks can only be made available to the user groups responsible for them.

Such an authorisation concept also ensures that users only receive notifications (warnings and alarms) that are within their area of responsibility.

The names of the devices in the navigator now follow the logic that if a user-defined name is assigned, it is used in the navigator. If the user-defined name is not assigned, the configured name is displayed. If this is also not assigned, the ifm product name appears.

Trends, level changes and volatility: now it is very easy to recognise these patterns. This is possible with the moneo|DataScience Toolbox’s new tool: the PatternMonitor. It enables automatic anomaly detection of individual critical process variables (e.g. temperature, flow, vibration, etc.). Using statistical methods, the tool checks whether an unexpected pattern occurs. In this way, the behaviour of the critical process variables is permanently monitored and the user is automatically informed of significant deviations.

The SmartLimitWatcher has two new health indicators that make it easier to track a developing problem. These indicators evaluate both the monitoring quality and the alarm frequency.

A change in the monitoring quality indicator shows that the original condition at the time of monitoring no longer exists. This should be checked and the monitoring readjusted. The alarm frequency, on the other hand, indicates how many times the limit has been exceeded in a given period of time.

False alarms can be avoided with the new ticket response delay in the SmartLimitWatcher: it prevents immediate creation of a ticket. A ticket is only created if the process value exceeds the limit value x times in succession.
