ifm’s design convinces again

2/5/23

This year, the renowned Red Dot Design Award goes to the O3R, the OVP800 video processing unit and the multi-cover puck from ifm.

Excellence in design: Once again ifm products have been awarded for their industrial design. This year, the renowned Red Dot Design Award goes to the perception platform consisting of the two solutions O3R and OVP800 as well as to the multi-cover puck of the Essen-based family company.

The fact that products from the ifm portfolio are being awarded for their design again this year is special. Firstly, because the competition has a long history. The origins of the award go back to 1954. In 2001, its German name “roter Punkt” was changed to Red Dot due to the internationalisation of the competition. Secondly, ifm has managed to submit its multi-cover puck to a renowned design award for the second year in a row. The puck indicates the exact position of ball valves and is a central component of highly automated systems. In 2022 it already won the German Design Award and the iF Award for its intelligent design. Now this is followed by the Red Dot Design Award. “Concerning the design, it was particularly important to me to make installation as easy as possible for the user and at the same time to allow adjustment during operation in order to be able to react to changing conditions in the plant,” explains Anna Küpker, Industrial Design & Innovation Strategy at ifm.

The multi-cover puck is not the only ifm product to receive the Red Dot Design Award this year. The jury was also impressed by the interaction of the O3R-platform and the OVP800 video processing unit. The multi-camera and multi-sensor system brings image processing directly to the edge, making it ideal for neural networks and artificial intelligence applications. “It was particularly important to the project team that our components could be integrated seamlessly and in the best possible way into the customers’ projects. The results are further proof that at ifm the technology, business and design divisions mesh perfectly,” explains Martin Schmidt, who also works in Industrial Design & Innovation Strategy at ifm. For him, the award is an incentive to continue working towards the best solutions in industrial design in the future. The multi-cover puck, the O3R-platform and the OVP800 video processing unit already show how it can be done.

Multi camera and sensor system for mobile robotics

Unites all senses

The O3R perception platform is a multi sensor and camera gateway in the size and cost structure of consumer products - with the long-term availability and robustness of industrial products. Up to six camera heads can be connected to the central processing unit via FPD link and additional sensors such as radar or lidar can be connected via Gigabit Ethernet interface.
