Green Team Twente winner of the Shell Eco-Marathon and the Drivers’ World Championship!

12/7/19

ifm Netherlands is the sponsor of Green Team Twente. From 2 to 5 July, the Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) 2019 took place in London. Team Twente participated and was the UrbanConcept winner in the hydrogen category of the SEM 2019.

Team Twente consists of 21 students from the University of Twente in Enschede who are working together on the goal of turning the world into a better and more efficient place. They have developed the most fuel-efficient hydrogen car in the world, which can (when converted to gasoline) travel 760 kilometres with only one litre of fuel.

From 2 to 5 July, the Shell Eco-Marathon 2019 took place in London, a competition that challenges students around the world to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. Green Team Twente participated in the UrbanConcept category, meaning that the car had to be as efficient as possible, but also had to have the looks and driving performance of current cars.

On Friday, 28 June, the team arrived in the UK for the technical inspection. Fortunately, they passed these without much trouble, which gave them plenty of time for practice rounds and making final adjustments to the car. Wednesday, 3 July, was the first competition day. For the competition, each team was allowed to make four attempts. Green Team Twente achieved great results for three out of four of those attempts, which ultimately led them to victory! This means they were the hydrogen UrbanConcept winner of the Shell Eco-Marathon 2019.

With this, a ticket to the Driver's World Championship (DWC) was secure. In this race, the top three UrbanConcept cars of every energy type (Battery Electric, ICE and Hydrogen) of the Shell Eco-Marathon competed against each other to set the fastest time.  After 7 laps, Green Team Twente was the first to finish, with a great distance to the runner-up. This makes them the first European team to win the DWC and the first team worldwide to win with a hydrogen car.
