Photoelectric distance sensor O6D

The O6D distance sensor offers maximum performance in the smallest space.

When it comes to reliably detecting deep black and shiny surfaces, the O6D sets new standards with its Ultimate Black Mode. It combines modern PMD technology and a range of up to 3 m in a compact housing, so that it can be mounted at a sufficient distance outside the danger zone in difficult situations, such as in welding systems. This makes it the ideal all-rounder for a wide range of applications, whether in logistics, assembly automation or the automotive industry.

Three selectable operating modes (Fine, Standard, Fast) and an adjustable hysteresis enable precise adaptation to any application. Thanks to intuitive 2-button operation and IO-Link, the sensor can be quickly integrated and is immediately ready for use. The proven O6 design allows for easy retrofitting without additional accessories.

The O6D in detail

Product benefits of O6D

Reliable detection of difficult surfaces
Ultimate Black Mode ensures reliable object detection even with deep black, shiny or reflective materials.

Versatile operating modes in one device
Three operating modes (fine, standard and fast) in one device for maximum adaptability to different applications.

Flexible installation
Compact design, PMD technology and a range of up to 3 m enable flexible installation.

Easy integration
Operation is via just two buttons, which enable both object teach and 2-point teach directly on the sensor – simple, fast and efficient.

Applications

Object detection in logistics

Detection of parcels or envelopes

Task
Detection of objects on conveyor belts, e.g. envelopes or parcels.

Challenge

  • Dark, flat, jet-black or reflective surfaces are often not reliably detected by conventional sensors.

Advantage

  • Thanks to Ultimate Black Mode and superior colour independence, the O6D reliably detects jet-black or shiny objects without requiring readjustment.

Presence verification on welding robots

Position detection prior to the welding process

Task
Ensuring that components are correctly positioned in the fixture before the automated welding process starts.

Challenge

  • Welding cells are characterised by harsh conditions involving heat and weld spatter. High temperatures and weld spatter can damage or interfere with sensors.

Advantage

  • The range of up to 3 m allows safe installation outside the hazardous area.

Distance measurement and distance control

Motion monitoring of robots

Task
Precise position detection of components in automated assembly processes.

Challenge

  • In automotive production, many surfaces are jet black or highly reflective. Conventional sensors often provide unreliable signals in such cases, which can lead to incorrect assembly steps.

Advantage

  • The angle-independent PMD technology enables flexible mounting and reliable detection even with shiny or dark components. Thanks to IO-Link, the reflection value can be output simultaneously with the distance value to ensure a smooth process.

System connection

Added value thanks to IO-Link

  • Transparent data generation
  • Current distance value
  • Current reflectivity value
  • Current device status
  • Easy and quick parameter setting
  • Loss-free data transmission

Frequently Asked Questions About photoelectric distance sensor O6D

What is a photoelectric distance sensor?

A photoelectric distance sensor detects the position or distance of an object using emitted light. In the case of the O6D, advanced PMD technology enables accurate and reliable measuring performance, even when detecting deep black, shiny, or reflective surfaces. This makes it a strong choice for industrial environments where high precision and dependable object detection are needed.

Does the O6D use time of flight technology?

Yes. The O6D uses a time of flight measuring principle to determine distance. The sensor works by emitting light and calculating the time it takes for the signal to return after being reflected by the target. Based on this flight time, the distance is determined with precise measurements, supporting reliable detection across a broad range.

Are ToF sensors the same as photoelectric distance sensors?

Time of flight is the measuring principle used to calculate distance, while photoelectric distance sensor describes the product category. ifm’s O6D photoelectric distance sensor uses time of flight technology for accurate and reliable distance detection.

How does the O6D perform in challenging ambient conditions?

The O6D is designed for reliable operation in demanding ambient conditions and industrial surroundings. Factors such as dust, reflective surfaces, changing light, and difficult object color can affect many sensors, but the O6D is developed for strong reliability in these applications. Its design also supports installation outside hazardous areas, making it suitable for welding cells, logistics, and automation tasks.
