In many industrial plants, water is used to provide cooling to mechanical seals on pumps and as a barrier fluid from potential harmful or dirty contaminants. In both cases, it is critical to maintain a minimum water flow rate to insure optimum pump performance.
CHALLENGE
 |
Traditional rotameter glass tube and metal float. Mineral build-up from feed water can cause the metal ball to stick inside the rotameter.
|
 |
Mechanical flapper-style flow switch with multiple moving parts can break off and clog the line. |
|
SOLUTION
 |
Apply the ifm SI 5 Series flow
sensor with no moving parts.
|
|
With no moving parts to stick or break in the process, the SI 5 Series flow sensor provides highly-accurate detection of the flow rate of liquids and gases. The sensor offers a combination of simple handling, easy setup, and flexible process connection options.

Features include:
- Stainless steel sensor withstands harsh conditions and caustic solutions
- Pushbutton programming for quick setup
- Highly-visible LEDs indicate the status of flow and output conditions.
- Modular mounting adapter system reduces inventory and enables quick installation
- Industry standard 4-pin Micro DC connector or 5-pin Micro AC connector

Simple mounting.
The SI 5 probe is inserted directly into the medium using a variety of simple-to-mount adapters. Made of 316 stainless steel, the probe withstands buildup and difficult flow applications. The compact, one-piece design offers flow indication directly on the LED display. |

Accurate and reliable flow detection.
Using the calorimetric principle to sense flow, the SI 5 flow sensor detects the cooling effect of a flowing fluid or gas to monitor the flow rate. The sensor tip houses two transistors and a heater element. When power is applied, the tip of the probe is heated. As the fluid begins to flow, heat will be carried away from the sensor tip. The difference in temperature between the two transistors provides a measurement of flow. |
